Starting the Search

How will we know when we meet the right dog?
We started our search for a new dog by filling out an online application and looking at the pictures of available dogs on the Golden Retriever Rescue of North Texas site. The dog we were interested in was already going through the adoption process, but the president of the organization thought that Dakota (pictured) would be a good match. We made arrangements with Dakota's foster mom to meet at a nearby dog park. We loaded up Miss Moo for the big date. Dakota was a nice looking fellow, smart and good and all, but he was not very interested in us or Miss Moo. There just wasn't any chemistry or connection between us. It wasn't a bad experience, but it was disappointing. I know we will never find another Tabasco -- and we're not trying to. This encounter had me questioning if we were really ready yet. It also had me wondering how we will know when the right dog comes along.

  1. We lost our dog, Max (Maxine) of 17 years - 6 years ago. We finally started looking over the past few years and then last June, Bella came along. Prior to her, we met other dogs and it just was not right...much like what you are going through right now.

We decided to take our time and not get a dog just to get one...It paid off because when we met Bella, we just knew she was right for us...

It will happen....you will find the right puppy dog for you!

  2. My husband really wanted a dog for a while and one day we got an email sent to a bunch of people about a dog that was rescued from being left in someone's back yard tied to a tree. It was a cute dog- black and white and the coloring matched my cat, Gracie. :) So Brad really wanted to take the dog (which looked like a pitt bull- boxer mix). So we drove out to Denton to 'look at him' and right away Brad wanted to take him home. That was the biggest mistake!! We took him home and the first thing he did was see Gracie and chase her around the house until she hid under the bed. From that moment on, he was constantly trying to get at her. He would bang his head up against the door until he nose would bleed. Brad had to sleep on the couch with the dog while I slept in our room with the cat just so the dog wouldn't continue banging on the door. After about 2 days of that, we realized this was not the dog for us, especially being that we could NEVER have that dog around a baby! He was just way too strong for us. We couldn't find another home for him and had to bring him to the SPCA of Dallas. Even though it is supposedly a no-kill shelter, I cried for about an hour straight when we dropped him off. It was the hardest thing I have ever had to do. So it is good for to you take your time and pick the right dog!!!!

  3. Dogs become members of your family, and it is a huge loss when they pass on. We lost our miniature schnauzer about 19 months ago. We were only without a dog for a few days when my husband loaded us all up in the car and drove us to Canton to look for a puppy. We spent the entire day looking at puppies, interacting with them, etc. before we found the right one. We ended up with a precious 6 week old Shih-tzu puppy that we named Sophie. She is a precious puppy and has been a wonderful addition to our family.
